Was The Secret Wrong About Goal Achievement?

Have you seen the movie The Secret?

If you have you'll know that it practically became the goal-achievement 'bible' overnight due to it's very simple, yet very powerful message about how you can be, do and have practically anything in life that you want as long as you do one or two key things.

They are:

1. Think about what you want on a regular basis
2. Think about it positively

That was it really. That was the 'secret' of The Secret!

Now, I'm not knocking this at all, far from it. First off, most people (myself included) can be really unfocused and unclear about what they want and spending any time focusing has got to be really beneficial, right?

And thinking positive, well, that's just obvious isn't it? After all, going through life with a dark cloud over your head is not really going to help you feel good about even STARTING your goals, let alone achieving them is it?

So I've no real problems with the advice that The Secret shares, it makes sense and, truth be told, thousands of people have already gone on to achieve great things as a result of following this simple advice, but again, there are a lot of people who couldn't seem to make it work for them and are now dismissive of the who goal achievement 'thing'.

Maybe you're one of them?

I certainly used to be.

I had already tried the whole positive thinking thing and holding my goals uppermost in my thoughts but still, the bills piled up and the same old hassles that were always in my life before were still there so I did what most people would do. I gave up the whole goal-setting thing as a waste of time and, for a time at least, focused on plain old fashioned hard work.

And it was just that.

HARD work!

Sure, I got results after a fashion but the work I put in always seemed to be greater than the results I'd get back. I know you know that feeling!

Then one day in the shower it hit me.

Most of what I'd been told about goal achievement was wrong!

In fact, I suddenly realised that although it was a nice sentiment, thoughts DON'T become things, but rather, they can become things if they're used correctly, but that thoughts themselves are pretty powerless.

I figured that that if thoughts really did automatically become things
then most teenage boys would materialise pretty young girls into their bedrooms. After all, this is what's on their minds most of the time, right? : )

Sounds funny, I know, but if you think about it, it's true. After all, if thinking clearly of something that's important to you, holding it in your mind and thinking about it a lot works to bring goals to life, then it should work, right?

The MAGIC Hundred Goal Achievement Program

And as to thinking positive...

I'd always been told that thinking positive was a critical step to making your goals come to life, but again I realised that this couldn't really be true. After all, if being positive made your goals come to life you should be able to sit in the middle of a busy road, smile and say 'I won't get hit, I won't get hit, I won't get hit" and sure enough, all the trucks will completely miss you.

Not a strategy that I think I'd like to try : )

The MAGIC Hundred Goal Achievement Program

It all makes sense doesn't it?

The idea that you can't just put on a happy face, think about your goals and have them come to life?

I think so anyway : )

So what's the real 'secret' to goal achievement?

Well, I guess it's simply that there isn't one. Not as in one hidden thing that once exposed will bring your goals to life. It's more a case of having a strategy that is proven to work rather than relying on hope or wishful thinking.

What's the strategy?

It's coming... I promise!

I'll tell you tomorrow : )

The Myth Of The Balanced Life... And How It Stops You From Achieving Your Goals

the magic hundred - the fastest goal achievement program on the planet
The Questions I've been receiving lately about how to achieve more of your goals even faster have been great!

So many excellent questions have been asked that I'm sure I'll be answering them for ages to come : )

Today's question is excellent...

"Dax, thanks so much for sharing your time and insights. My big question is how you create a sustainable life/routines/etc. where you're moving towards your goals without burning out. I've been following your program and "failing forward" but it happens in fits and starts."

Charlie

My Answer...

Hey Charlie

I love this question!

I think it’s so important to understand how life ‘fits’ into our goals as most people give themselves a really hard time in this area.

I think it stems from the ‘work/life balance’ myth that says we’re supposed to strive for balance in all areas of our lives.
I couldn’t disagree more!

You see, when you try an balance work with home, income with outgoings, letting your hair down with following the big plans you’ve laid out for yourself, you are, in effect, pulling opposite ends of the same rope and, well, going nowhere.
Life, I believe, is not so much about balance. It’s about integration.

Just like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle must fit together in order to reveal the whole picture, so too do aspects of our own lives have to integrate and fit with the other pieces of our ‘life puzzle’.

The best way to do that, regardless of what you’ve been told, is not to seek balance but to allow different parts of who you are to have their ‘time in the sun’ so to speak.

I like to think of us as all being slightly schizophrenic. Weird, I know, but it serves to help me to understand this better.
Let me use myself a an example;

I’m a Dad.
I’m husband.
I’m a son.
I’m a brother.
I’m a writer.
I’m an entrepreneur.
I’m a fitness coach.
I’m an inspirational speaker.
I’m a journalist.
I’m an athlete.
I’m an adventurer.
And I’m so much more besides!

(So are you!!)

Now, it’s pretty easy to see how each of my personalities has different needs. My needs as a father are different to my needs as a husband and different again to my needs as an entrepreneur. If I try to ‘balance’ these instead of integrate them I make zero improvement in any area as each one has a different set of needs.

The dad in me needs to be home to do more with my kids, the entrepreneur needs me to travel more, work longer hours, write, speak and more.

If I balance the 2, then my work doesn’t grow and my family quality improves only slightly (if at all).

However, if I follow the integration idea then I ‘allow’ myself the freedom to put my life out of balance for specific periods of time to achieve certain goals. For example, I work harder than normal and for longer hours than normal for 6 weeks whilst bringing a new project to life. The new project brings me greater income and that new income is spent on…

…my family, with whom I now take a month off to travel the world and see interesting things.

Can you see how the integration model allows for more results in your life?

Understanding that the imbalance is where the results come from is the key to success, I believe, and should not only actively pursue an imbalanced life, but go further and try to create the imbalances of our own choosing.

The beauty of this is that you never burn out. You have new targets and new inspirations and new goals to work on all the time and you’re using the imbalances in a positive, constructive and guilt-free way.

Everybody wins : )

How To Fail... and Still Win!

Wow!

I asked for your biggest 2 questions to do with motivation, success or goal setting and I certainly got a bunch. Not just here but through private messages and emails.

Honestly, I'm stunned at the amount of questions I received here...

Anyway, let's get down to it shall we?

I'm going to try and answer 1-2 questions a day so bear with me whilst I work through them all ok?

The first questions are from Marilyn...

"Hi, Dax:

1. How do I stay focused on my goals if I end up keeping some of them a secret because of a significant other who is very negative and ridiculing? I think I know the answer but I guess I needed a second opinion, Doc. :-)

2. I too have had a Dickensian childhood and was able to overcome a lot of it using only my own inner strength with no support (long story). Having said that, how do I keep from beating myself up when I make a mistake towards one of my steps for a goal or even just keep my get-there-now-itis under control? I know I have the strength and control but sometimes I get a little bit of a war going on - like 1 side is hang in there your almost there, the other - you're too this - too that - not practical - that sort of nonsense.

Thanks a lot Dax for any suggestions."

My Answers

Well Marilyn, as for question 1 and staying focused in the face of ridicule I think you have to do several things.

First, remind yourself that this is about YOU. Not your kids, your husband, your work colleagues or anyone else. You.

You see, you can't do things for other people. You can't do things because of other people and you certainly can't NOT do things because of other people. Not if you hope to be happy anyway.

Abraham Lincoln once said 'you cannot help the poor by becoming one yourself' and I agree. And this goes for much more than money. If you have no belief in yourself, you can't help others to believe. if you have no joy in your life, you cannot help others to find joy in their.

You simply cannot give what you yourself do not have in abundance.

Where am I going with this?

Simple!

Your job is not to 'win over' or gain the support of your partner. It's nice when that happens but one shouldn't rely on it. Your job is to begin, small at first, then in larger and larger amount, to gain an abundant store of successes in your life. Likewise joy. Likewise happiness. Likewise love.

Find these things wherever you can and build YOUR life to be the shape that YOU want it to be.

Let no-one stop you.

No one.

If sharing your dreams brings you ridicule then don't share them with those that would ridicule you. Share them with like-minded people only. You can find them forums and communities like www.daxmoy.ning.com and others. Find that small spark of your dreams and kindle a small flame from them, then help it grow by sharing them with those who are also pursuing theirs.

In short, get strong. Create a store of your successes. Don't stop.

The truth is, not all people share your dreams. They have their own. It's a shame though when some people, especially those who claim to love and care for us, feel the need to trample on ours.

It hurts. That's natural. We're human.

But still, don't stop.

Never stop.

Your dreams are the reason you're here : )

As for your second question, you WILL make mistakes.

Knowing this should free you.

See, if you KNOW you're going to make mistakes, you can stop worrying about 'whether', 'if' and 'when' and simply pursue you goals and dreams anyway, 'safe' in the knowledge that at some time in the future, you WILL screw up.

Now, isn't that a weight off your mind : )

Instead of looking at mistakes as 'screw ups' or failures, and feeling negative about them, ask yourself "Did I fail forward?"

By this, I mean, ask yourself "Even though I failed in relation to the target I set, am I closer to my goal now than I was before I started out on this goal?" If the answer is yes, then you should seek as many opportunities to fail as possible, take more action, take more 'risks' for every 'trip', every stumble, every fall is bringing you ever closer to your ultimate goal.

It's a lot faster than playing it safe and NOT setting out at all for fear of failure, right?

I always tell people that ask me (and I mean it) that I'm the biggest failure I know.

And I don't feel negative about it. In fact, I feel positive!

You see, I've failed more things than anyone else I've ever met personally, but only because I attempt more things than anyone else I've ever met personally : )

Yet, with each failure, I learn more, my abilities grow, my confidence grows and I add to my skills and knowledge. In short, I fail forward.

Stop fearing failure Marilyn (and everyone) and simply pursue what you want in the knowledge that, at some point, you'll fall flat on your face.

At that point, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start over.

What's The TRUE Measure Of Success?

"What most fundamentally characterizes the well-adjusted, or highly sane person is not chiefly the particular habits or attitudes that he holds, but rather the deftness with which he modifies them in response to changing circumstances." - Wendell Johnson

What a great quote, huh?

Really makes you think about all those times when you've hoped, wished and dreamed that thing in your life would change for the better and yet prevented the very same from happening by failing to change the way you're approaching life doesn't it?

(Well, it does for me anyway!)

Think about it; how many times in your life have you said to yourself "Things have GOT TO change! I can't live like this anymore!" and then gone right out and done the things you've always done in the exact same way you've always done them?

Come on, be honest!

I bet that for many of you, many of your New Year's resolutions have already given way to your old habits and you're doing things the way you've always done them, right?

Well, you can change all that today you know.

You really can.

And it's simple too.

Just do 1 thing differently to the way you normally do it.

Drive another route home.

Leave work an hour earlier.

Stay an hour later.

Take a day off.

Read a book.

Take the kids to a movie.

Send flowers.

Call your parents.

Look, it really doesn't matter what you do but do it differently and the change begins.

And once it does, wow!

Don't believe me?

Just try changing something in your life today then tell stand back and observe the amazing difference it makes to your life.

You'll be stunned by how the small things lead to big results!

What Are YOUR 2009 Goals? Think BIG!

Well, 2009 is finally here and, as is customary for me, I’ve built my first MAGIC Hundred to coincide with Jan 1st which means it’ll end on April 10th.

Sounds like a long time doesn’t it? But it’s not, especially with the goals I’ve set myself this time around.

I’ve been thinking VERY big this time - as you’ll see from the list below- and have set many goals that are way outside of my comfort zone, knowledge base or previous experiences.

But that’s the point right? : )

After all, as I’m always saying, if you want new things in your life, you’ve got to DO new things in your life, right?

Or put another way, if you keep doing what you’ve always done you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.

So, the list is big. Massive even.

But boy, is it inspiring to me even to think about how I’m going to accomplish it!

You’ll notice that each section has some massively challenging goals as well as some more ‘simple’ ones.

In the adventure section I’m talking about flying to the edge of space, doing oxygen assisted freefall jumps, running marathons through deserts and more.

Believe it or not, I’m not an adrenaline junkie in the true sense. I feel fear like anyone else and the thought of some of my adventures both excites me and grips me with fear at the same time.

But I’m doing them because I want to grow as a person and experience more… a lot more!

In the education section I’m looking at learning new skills for my business, my profession and life in general.

Some, like learning to play guitar from a rock or pop star may seem obvious challenges whilst others may seem strange or just silly.

Like reading Roald Dahl children’s books.

I’ve included this in my education section because I’ve decided that certain elements of my life have become too serious, I’ve become to ‘grown up’.

So by reading this great books from my childhood, masterpieces all, I’m hoping to relearn that childhood wonder, excitement and sense of fun that all of us lose throughout our lives.

Only time will tell if my theory is correct, but it certainly won’t hurt, right?

My Health and Fitness goals are all pretty obvious but nevertheless, include some goals that are, even to my ears, are downright crazy. Like 100,000 pushups.

That’s 1000 pushups a day for the duration!

Why did I choose that? I don’t know, it just came to me as a gut feeling, so I trust it and will ‘go for it’ nonetheless.

Likewise my ultradistance marathon of 250km across the Atacama desert in Chile. I don’t even enjoy running! I know, weird huh? : )

My financial goals are MASSIVE!

I’ve never set such aggressive goals for my finances before. I have no precedent for most of them and don’t even know how I’m going to make them happen, I just know that I’ll be taking action on multiple fronts at once and breathing life into ideas I’ve had for ages but done nothing about.

My Relationship goals are all designed to reconnect me with the most important people in my life and show them that I care.

Like most people, I often get caught up with ‘busyness’ and forget to show my family how important they are to me. I’ve taken a lot of action over the last few years to improve this, like regular, long vacations, giving up weekend work and working from home 2 days a week but this round of goals will make a fair impact, I’m sure.

So look, read through the list below and by all means, feel free to share your thoughts about my 100 days of MAGIC.

I hope that, in some small way, they encourage you to think bigger about your own goals and give you the confidence to go for what you really want, rather than settling for the mundane or the ordinary that most people tend to.

The way I see it is that 100 days are going to pass ANYWAY regardless of what goals you do or don’t set, so why not set them big and go for it?

Go on, share your big goals… I dare ya!

Why The Law Of Attraction Doesn't Work Part 2 - Positive Thinking

Yesterday's post about why the law of attraction doesn't work seems to have gotten quite a few people thinking.

Granted, there are only 4 comments on the blog (shame because there were same great posts to me personally) but there were over 200 emails received as a result of the posting so clearly, the subject is getting people really thinking.

What amazed me most is that I expected a lot more 'argument' in support of the popular view of the law of attraction yet I actually received far, far more mail telling me I'd helped people understand how it works and, interestingly, to feel less guilty or like a failure (their words) when they couldn't manifest what the law of attraction had been promising them.

What they DID ask, however, was if the law of attraction had a fatal flaw in it, did that hold true for the other success 'laws'?

Good question, let's find out shall we?

**************************
Part Two
**************************

I've given over 80 talks about mindset and goal achievement in the last 12 months to groups ranging from 20 to 2000 coming from all walks of life and practically every nation on the planet.

Whenever I begin one of my talks I always lay out the three 'big myths' about achieving your goals and why falling for them can cost you not only your goals but your passion and your happiness too.

Yesterday I covered myths 1 and 2 so today I wanted to cover the myth of positive thinking as I believe that this is probably the most pervasive and negatively impactful myth around achievement and success that most people fall for.

Now, don't get me wrong; I'm a big positive thinker myself focusing upon the possible rather than the impossible, on the can rather than the can't and on the power, possibility and promise of a situation rather than the drain, strain and lack of gain that most people seem to focus on.

But that doesn't mean that I believe positive thinking creates positive results in and of itself.

You see, depite what most people think, positive thinking has very little power to create the end-result you're most looking for whether that's earning more money, getting a better job or living the lifestyle of your dreams. Or anything else for that matter.

Now, if you've read around success literature very much then you'll probably disagree with me on this. I don't blame you, this is how we've been trained to think. This is what we've been told is true by practically every success coach and goal guru for the last 150 years.

But lets think on this a little...

Imagine you're sitting on the road in the middle of the highway.

You've a massive smile on your face and you're thinking happy, positive thoughts as the traffic whizzes by you at 70 miles an hour. You feel pretty good!

You're confident and positive that no harm will befall you.

Question: How long do you think your positive thinking will keep you from harms way?

Another example from Tony Robbins own collection of thoughts on the subject....

You walk out in to your garden and smile and say over and over "There's no weeds, there's no weeds, there's no weeds"

You follow this little ritual on a daily basis for six months or even a year, maintaining a positive attitude to your garden.

What do you think will happen?

Weeds right?

So look, positive thinking isn't the be all and end all of getting what you want.

Yes, it's an important part (after all, negativity certainly doesn't help ANYTHING) but positivity by itself only creates what I call 'Happy Fool Syndrome' where you maintain a smile despite whatever else is going on in your life. Sure, it's a better approach than going through life with a frown but it definitely won't guarantee your success in anything.

You see, positivity is only valuable to the degree that it gets you to take positive ACTION.

If you maintain a smile but don't DO the things that are PROVEN to create success then success simply won't come. It can't!

Only action changes anything, positive thinking doesn't.

So here's the test.

Stop judging your probability for success based upon how positive you're thinking, start judging it only on the actions you took toward making the goal happen; no matter how small.

Eating right and drinking right are far more likely to give you the body and the health you desire than thinking positive about your health alone.

Studying for a new skillset, starting your own business or getting a promotion at work are more likely to help you get the big house on the hill than just thinking positive about your lifestyle.

Thinking positively, on the other hand changes nothing unless it gets you to take action, action, action.

By all means, maintain a sunny, cheery disposition and a 'can do' attitude to life. I'm not knocking it, but make EVERY day a day where you took action on that positivity and things will change more than you'd ever believe.

Truth, joy and love

Dax Moy
www.themagichundred.com

P.S - If you're still not convinced about what I'm saying here, try this experiment.

Trial 1 -

1. Get a stopwatch and press start.
2. Think about making a cup of tea or coffee.
3. Get your mind to the place where you REALLY want that drink.
4. Think positively about getting your coffee.
5. Wait for the coffee to come and keep the timer running.

Trial 2 -
1. Get a stopwatch and press start.
2. Think about making a cup of tea or coffee.
3. Turn on the kettle and prepare the cups with coffee.
4. When kettle boils, pour water into cup.
5. Drink first sip then hit Stop on stopwatch.

Which was faster?

Action wins, right!

Look, think positive all you want, I highly recommend it, but measure the effectiveness of that positivity only by what you DO as a result of it,

Why The Law Of Attraction Doesn't Work Part 1

It's true you know, despite what you've heard, despite what you've
read, despite what all the success guru's have told you, the law of
attraction doesn't work.

I know, I know, it's hard to take in isn't it?

After all, like many people you've probably been pinning all your
hopes on 'attracting' success and happiness and wealth into your
life by thinking positive thoughts, by focusing on what you want
from life and by 'intentioning' the life you want for yourself.

If you're a true believer in the 'Law' of Attraction you've
probably also been practicing gratitude, telling yourself that
'thoughts become things' and reminding yourself as often as you can
that you 'become what you think about'.

In short, you've been doing everything you're 'supposed' to do to
activate the law of attraction but, well, where has it got you?

If you're healthier, wealthier, wiser and happier as a result then
congratulations. You probably don't need to read on any further.
You've obviously found a way to make the law work in your life.

However, if you're like the bulk of people who follow the law of
attraction philosophies and yet are still struggling to find the
happiness, contentment and success you're seeking then read on
because I'm about to reveal the REAL 'secret' to the law of
attraction and show you how you can apply it in your life to
achieve dramatic, often immediate results.

But before I do, let me tell you what the Law of Attraction is NOT,
that way you'll stop wasting your time and energies on things that don't
produce results in your life.

The Law of Attraction is NOT:

You become what you think about.

I know, I know, I'm going against what practically every motivational
and self help guru has been telling us for as long as we can remember.

In fact, I myself believed this until recently and often taught this principle
to anybody and everybody who would listen. But I was wrong.

You DON'T become what you think about at all. If you did then most
teenage boys would turn into pretty young girls!

A silly comparison I know, but no less silly than the idea that we really become
what we think about.

There are many, many things we think about every day and some that we feel strongly and emotionally attached to but we don't become that thing.

What about 'Thoughts become things'? Right or wrong?

Well, in the truest physical and even metaphysical sense, thoughts are made of energy and energy is a 'thing' so I guess it's right, but that's not what most success gurus are talking about. They're telling us that by shaping a thought we can manifest that object into the real world and truly make the thought a thing.

Certainly, true of many things. We have ideas and, once we take action on them they 'manifest' in the sense that we build or create them either with our own hands or in factories.

BUT...

Not always.

In fact, not even often.

We have thousands of thoughts a day but they don't all turn into something in the way that Law of Attraction supporters tell us they will.

Why?

Because, what you think about is only a tiny, tiny portion of attraction.

Thoughts DON'T become things.

Thoughts, if thought often enough and with enough intensity, tend to become feelings... NOT things.

Feelings, if felt often enough and with enough intensity, tend to become emotions... NOT things.

Emotions, if felt often enough and with enough intensity, tend to drive us to take action. (E- Motion!)

And action, no matter how small, if taken consistently, allows you to BE, DO and HAVE.... Things!

It's no surprise that the law of attraction contains the word ACTION. Nor is it a surprising that the word satisfaction contains the word ACTION either (In fact, satisfaction literally means 'enough action')

The real power behind the 'secret' law of attraction is simply getting yourself to think the thoughts and feel the feelings that make you want to take action. You do this by following your dreams and pursuing the goals that you REALLY want to happen rather than those that others tell you are realistic.

In other words, you get them by getting your butt up off the couch and DOING SOMETHING about them rather than thinking about them. Not what most people want to hear, I know, but true nonetheless.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about another success fallacy and how to stop it from holding you back from your dreams but in the meantime I hope you'll do 2 things.

First, be sure to leave me a comment about this post. I'm sure that many of you have a bunch to say about it and I'd genuinely love to hear from you.

Second, write down, think about and then take action on just 1 goal and write it down here in the blog. Just by doing so you move that tiny bit closer to making it real.

P.S - Before you think I'm a 'doubter' or cynic, let me tell you, I'm studying a masters degree in metaphysics and absolutely love the subjects I'm studying as well as the hundreds of books I've already read on the subject. I just believe that attracting success into your life is about more than positive thinking. If you think so too then you might want to check out www.themagichundred.com and find out how to go from goal SETTING to goal GETTING faster than any positive thinking program ever will.

Start Today For Success

"Much may be done in those little shreds and patches of time whichevery day produces, and which most men throw away. " - Charles Caleb Colton

How true that quote is huh?

Most of us go through life 'putting off until tomorrow' again and again and again thinking that they have all the time in the world to get what they want from life, yet in doing so they're literally throwing away great chunks of their life.

Chunks that they'll never get back.

It's been said that a great life is merely a series of great years,
that a great year is but a series of great month, that a greatmonth is but a series of great weeks and that, ultimately a great week is nothing more than 7 great days strung together.

Achieving a great life sounds simple when you think of it that way
doesn't it?

Yet it's so easy to fall into the habit of living this principle in reverse, stringing together bad days into bad weeks, into badmonths into bad years and then looking back with regret on a lifetime that feels like it's been wasted.

Don't make this mistake.

It's not too late to really make a difference and achieve something amazing with the 175 daysthat are left of 2008.

175 days could see you a lot fitter than you are now, a lot healthier, a lot wealthier.

It could see you become an author, starting your own business, travelling to far flung places or any other number of wonderful things.

It COULD!

But you've got to start.

Don't waste another day.

Your life depends upon it!

Are You Committing This Success Sin?

"It must be borne in mind that the great tragedy in life is not in
failing to reach all of your goals--it is in having no goals for
which you are reaching.

It is not a calamity if somehow you die with dreams unfulfilled but
it is a calamity not to dream.

It is not a disgrace if you fail to reach the stars, but it is a
disgrace if you have no stars for which you are reaching.

It is not a disaster if you fail to achieve your highest ideals,
but it is a disaster if you have no high ideals for which you are
striving. Not failure, but lower aim is sin."

Benjamin Elijah Mays – Former President Of Morehouse college

This is an amazing quote, don't you agree?

The first time I came across this quote I was quite literally
stunned by power of these simple truths and the recognition that
whenever we choose to settle for less of ANYTHING in this life we
diminish not only the results we achieve but the person we become.

I hope by reading this powerful message you've been reminded to
stretch, reach, grasp and take action on achieving everything you
want to be, do and have in this life.

I know I sure have!
